A front-row seat to Fuego
Camping at 4000m on the slopes of Acatenango, almost hit by lightning during a thunderstorm, all for a spectacular view of Volcán de Fuego erupting through the night.
A journey through the dense jungle took us through the clouds in the pouring rain. Luckily the weather cleared up once we arrived, much to the delight of our canine companion. Seen below taking a well deserved rest from constantly scouting out the next 100m of the trail and running back to us. He must've covered about twice the distance.
Up at the base camp we get a fire started to heat up our dinner and brave the smoke as we attempt to dry our gear. All through the night we feel Fuego shake the earth, hear it growl and are in awe of the explosions of lava shooting high into the night sky glowing against the starry backdrop.
Unzipping our tent and greeted by the same view we cherished during the darkness of the night, yet now with the sun revealing the vastness of the surrounding volcanic landscape.
By midday it's time to take a different route down the mountain. A much faster one since the steep incline combined with the volcanic gravel below our feet gives way with each step. With good balance it's possible to half jog, half slide down the slopes of Acatenango as Fuego starts to disappear behind the luscious green jungle replacing it at lower altitudes.
