Snorkelling with gentle giants
Exploring a diverse marine plant and animal ecosystem in the Carribbean coral reefs and experiencing some tasty Belizean heat in a bottle.
After a long bus journey through Belize on land, we head via boat to Caye Caulker, one of Belize's many islands. Being a former British colony this is the first time we put our novice Spanish to rest and switch back to English. Although also this can be challenging since many speak an English-based creole language which developed during the 17th and 18th century.
During our approach the picturesque sandy beaches lined with palm trees slowly come into view. Once on the island we don't hesitate to explore the nearby reefs teeming with aquatic life. We encounter a curious manatee near an old shipwreck. And much less docile than their sea cow counterparts, we swim among a frenzy of sharks and spot a turtle foraging along the sea bed.
After an exciting day spent in the water, we watch the sun set from a rooftop savouring the tasty dinner we just had ...significantly elevated with some dashes of Belize's staple hot sauce.
