The 3-peak Watzmann traverse

A total ascent of 2100m to follow a ridge line route traversing three peaks in one of Germany's highest mountain ranges.

The 3-peak Watzmann traverse

The Watzmann is one of Germany's highest mountains situated in the heart of the Alps. The trek begins with a long section through a pine forest. As one starts to climb the distinct bell of alpine cows grazing in the meadows serves as an indicator of which direction to head.

Higher still the forest and vibrant wildflowers begin to disappear, giving way to sharp, rocky peaks in the distance. I climb from peak to peak along the ridges taking in the breathtaking views as the mist of some clouds obscuring the view begins to fade.

After passing the three ridges (Hocheck 2651m, Mittelspitze 2713m and Südspitze 2712m) a steep rubble slope is the beginning of the final stretch back into the valley. After descending 2100m it's time to make up for the lost calories with a big portion of Spätzle.
